Diana died on August 31, 1997, after a car carrying her crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. Her companion, Dodi Al Fayed, and driver Henri Paul also died in the crash, while bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived.
French and British investigations concluded that Henri Paul’s driving and the pursuing paparazzi were major factors in the crash. The 2008 British inquest reached a verdict of unlawful killing, attributing responsibility to the grossly negligent driving of Paul and the pursuing paparazzi. There is no newly confirmed family statement overturning those findings.
Interest in Diana’s final days remains particularly strong because members of the Spencer family continue to speak about her legacy. Her brother, Charles Spencer, has recently reflected publicly on the anniversary of her death and is preparing a memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which revisits their relationship and his memories of her.
The timing has also fueled renewed speculation, with Diana’s 30th death anniversary approaching in 2027. Every new photograph, recording, interview, or family comment can quickly become the basis for dramatic online theories.
